Whenever I drive along King George Highway and spot the familiar black and white logo, I can still hear the jingle in my mind. "We do more than the others do, we do the most for you, K&D Furniture." I grew up in White Rock, so the tune is as familiar as a summer picnic on the beach.

My father, at one time, was not only a customer but a supplier — our family business being one that manufactured a line of upholstered footstools. So I feel a natural affinity with K&D's second generation owner, Allyson Chenier, and in no time we’re chatting like old friends.

In fact, Allyson says the comfortable, easygoing ambiance is a huge part of what keeps multiple generations of furniture buyers returning to K&D. "My parents opened the first store here in 1972, and now we're seeing many of those very first customers referring their grandchildren to us."

Your Unique Flair

"Every customer is an individual with a unique sense of style and decorating flair," Allyson says with a contagious enthusiasm. "Because my husband and I are still very active on the floor — we are constantly talking to our customers and getting to know them — when we go to the large furniture shows, we understand what people are looking for here on the west coast — which is often totally different than in other parts of the country."

Allyson also considers it important to buy Canadian whenever possible. "We do bring in some product from off shore and from other countries because it allows us to offer more affordable prices for young people who are furnishing their first home. But we only import when we can't find what we are looking for right here within Canada."

And unlike many big box retailers where you might find the perfect sofa only to discover your choice of fabric is limited to the three an anonymous buyer has decided on — none of them ones that work with your décor — at K&D there's never a moment's hesitation opening the books of fabric swatches. "You absolutely don't have to settle for what's on the floor. If the manufacturer offers it, we'll get it made for you," Allyson says.

Even better, now with two stores — the original in White Rock and a new 24,000-square-foot showroom in Langley — there’s even more choice. "We try not to duplicate the products we carry in each store, because it allows us to appeal to two different markets," she says. "It's actually quite common for people to visit both stores before they make a final choice."

Above and Beyond Service

At K&D, the emphasis is squarely on service — from the moment you step inside until you serve the first meal on your new dining room suite. "I get calls every day about our delivery staff," Allyson says. "It's a matter of trust — as a customer you're allowing people you don't know to come into your home. So we don’t just deliver your furniture. We unpack it, set it up, put it in position, and then clear away the packaging. Basically, all you have to do it point and we look after the rest.
